About the Course Leader
Nawroz Zakholy is a poet, actor, and playwright whose work explores stage performance, language, and memory, with a particular focus on family histories, migration, and embodied archives. Originally from Järva, she has long been involved in cultural and educational initiatives for young people in the area. She studied theatre at Sundbybergs Folkhögskola and holds degrees in literary studies and communication from Södertörn University. In addition to her artistic practice, Nawroz has worked as a communications professional and regularly collaborates with Tensta konsthall and Folkets Husby.

She also teaches subject-specific pedagogy with a focus on spoken-word poetry and storytelling at the Stockholm Institute of Music Education (SMI). As a poet and performing artist, she has appeared in contexts such as Revolution Poetry, the Royal Swedish Opera, Parkteatern, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Unga Klara, and Dramaten. In 2018, she contributed to Revolution Poetry’s anthology (Bonnier Carlsen), and in 2022 she participated in the performance Poetic (R)Evolution at Berwaldhallen, directed by Nachla Libre. That same year, one of her texts was published in the journal Vård och Värde, which also inspired the title of the exhibition With Tired Backs and Hearts with Room for More at Kalmar Art Museum. In May 2025, her play Long Roads Home premiered at Teater Tre.

A Note from Nawroz “I write best when I have a framework but still have room to break the rules, and that is exactly how this course works. Together we will experiment with words and expression, read how others have done it, put language to what lives inside us, and welcome new ideas. This course is not about grades or performance. It is about giving yourself a chance—to make mistakes, start over, get it right, get it wrong, or do neither. Most importantly, it is about simply doing the work. The best part is that we do it together: hanging out, sharing fika, and getting to know one another.”

Funding
This course is supported by the Swedish Arts Council through its Reading and Literature Promotion Initiative.
